The snow is at Strafford Nordic Center is fabulous and we are expecting more on Saturday! For this reason we are starting the event with a ONE HOUR DELAY to give Strafford Nordic Center an extra hour to groom the new snow, and the people who are driving here an extra hour for the roads and snow to clear.

We hope to see you all on Sunday!

Date:  Sunday January 19th, 2020

Location: The Strafford Nordic Center - (http://www.straffordnordicskiing.com/)  In addition to great snow, they have rentals and lessons available if you're interested in trying, say, skate skiing along with your classic (note: snow shoers are welcome!)

Cost: $20 for those 18 and over; $15 for those under 18.  This covers the cost of the trail pass at the Strafford Nordic Center good for skiing their fabulous trails all day, plus a little extra to cover their grooming and course setting and use of their room to warm up/put on boots, etc.. Please bring cash or a check if possible, they do have a credit card machine, but it's easier if you bring cash or a check.

  • Bib pick up starts at 10:00 am

  • 5k Skate Race:11:00 a.m. start time (note: you can ski classic in the skate race)

  • 5k Classic Race: 12 noon start time (note: you can skate ski in the classic race if you want, or double pole around the course... this has been done!)

The Chili Fest/Awards Party:  We will continue the tradition of having a post-race chili/cornbread/cookie party at Dan and Natalie Ruml's house close by the Strafford Nordic Center. Directions will be passed out at the race. .  We will provide chili (both a veggie chili and a regular full-on meat chili), the rest is potluck (cornbread, salad, fruit salad, veggie snacks, desserts), including BYOB.

If you haven't done this before, please be advised that it is a TOTALLY CASUAL and NON-THREATENING "race" for rower-skiers of ALL ABILITIES!  If all you can manage is a walk around the course on your skis, you are qualified for this race! In prior years the times for the classic race ranged from 21 to 51 minutes.  Yes, there are VERY FAST people and yes, there are VERY SLOW people so there is no excuse not to come.  It is a self-seeded mass start with one or two long loops so no one gets in anyone’s way.  The only race rule is that impolite, aggressive, or rude people risk not being asked back next year.  So play hard, but play nice! We run the skate race first and then groom for the classic race, if you only skate you can do that for both races, if you only classic you can do that for both races.

“Register”/RSVP to uppervalleyrc@gmail.com or call Rowan or Carin. Feel free to forward this email to other rowers who might want to come.
